Payroll Manager

Job Summary: This role is based in the Chicago, IL Corporate Office and is part of the Shared Services Accounting team. The Payroll Manager is responsible for the delivery of payroll services to all properties and support functions with a focus on driving best practices and process improvements within all areas of payroll service. This is a high volume payroll environment servicing 10,000+ across the organization. 

Responsibilities:

  • Direct all day-to-day payroll processing and reporting in accordance with federal, state and local tax laws, and corporate policies and procedures
  • Ensure payroll tax reporting and remittance are timely and in compliance with applicable tax laws and all payroll accounts are reconciled timely and accurately
  • Assess current payroll resources including technology, personnel and processes to identify, recommend, and implement prioritized solutions focused on driving best practices and process improvements to support the long-term growth plans of the company
  • Review exception reports for time submitted to verify hours and rules are reasonable; coordinate and resolve inaccurate information with operations
  • Evaluate and document business procedures related to payroll processes and ensure payroll employees are properly trained
  • Partner with various internal departments including information technology, accounting, operations, human resources and legal, and effectively manage external payroll service vendor relationships
  • Develop a highly skilled and well-trained staff (provide appropriate training, coaching and career opportunities) to ensure the efficient and effective support to the business
  • Develop and implement payroll department structure and processes to increase the efficiency of the department while establishing/maintaining an effective internal control structure, with self-audit procedures that will ensure the consistent application of payroll policies
  • Responsible for understanding incentive and benefit plans, as well as relevant Human Resource payroll-related policies in order to ensure that payments and expenses are accurate and appropriate
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies
  • Comply with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislations; enforcing adherence to requirements; filing financial reports; advising management on needed actions
  • Support expansion via new lodge openings domestically; international growth may also occur

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of relevant payroll leadership experience
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and facilitation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and influence others across organizational levels  
  • Resilient in a fast-paced, changing environment; ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities
  • Demonstrated change/project management skills; can effectively lead projects by establishing priorities, building and executing project plans, and delivering on commitments
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to problem solve and use technology to improve the efficiency of the team
  • Demonstrated experience with developing, implementing, managing, and monitoring effective internal controls
  • The ability to travel (10-20%, generally within US)
  • Strong Microsoft Office Suite skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting
  • CPA certification
  • Experience with a major theme park or brand hotel
  • Experience with UltiPro (UKG) highly desirable
  • Experience in shared services model
  • Demonstrated ability to implement best practices in a shared services environment
