With the New Year coming, now is the time\nto set the stage for success in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Successful salary negotiation involves more than believing\nyou deserve more for all your hard work. You have to tactfully present your\ncase and be prepared to negotiate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So how do you ask for a raise in a way that will get you\nserious consideration?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Timing\nis Everything!<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>As with most things in life, timing could mean the\ndifference between success and failure. If your manager is in the middle of an\nimportant project, it\u2019s probably not a great time to raise the issue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.glassdoor.com\/blog\/guide\/how-to-ask-for-a-raise\/\">According\nto an article by Glassdoor<\/a>, it\u2019s a good idea to find out when your\ncompany does their fiscal budget planning. When do the annual performance\nreviews take place? When does your company make salary decisions for the next\nyear?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look at the overall financial health of your company. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indeed.com\/career-advice\/pay-salary\/guide-how-to-ask-for-a-raise\">The Indeed\ncareer guide<\/a> also suggests you look at other companies\nwithin your industry, do company research and look at financial reports to get\na better idea as to how your company is doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Build\nYour Case<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Take the time to do your research and be prepared. Show\nproof of your success stories and how the company benefited from your work. If\npossible, show data as to how you contributed to ROI. Remind your boss of any\naccolades you may have received after having completed key projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Know\nYour Worth<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, do your research (sense a theme here?). What is the\nmarket value of your position at your level of experience? Check out salary\nguides published by companies in your area of specialty. Set a range in advance\nof what you\u2019d like to receive as a salary increase and go in with that range in\nmind. That said, it\u2019s also important to be flexible in case your boss has other\nideas as to what\u2019s fair and what\u2019s not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>It\u2019s\nAll in the Delivery!<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>As important as it is to have a clear message, the way in\nwhich you <em>deliver<\/em> your message can be\njust as crucial to success in salary negotiation. Practise your pitch in\nadvance and anticipate potential objections. Be confident and enthusiastic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Present your information in a clear and logical way with\ndata and\/or stories to back it up. Keep it simple and don\u2019t overcomplicate\nthings. Talk slowly and remember to breathe to ease your nerves!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Believe\nin Yourself<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>When preparing to negotiate a salary increase, remember\nthat you\u2019ve <em>earned<\/em> the right to ask! Be\nconfident in your abilities and with your message. If you\u2019re unsure of\nyourself, chances are your boss will sense it and it won\u2019t help your position\nin the negotiation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While it\u2019s important you aim for what you want, it\u2019s also\nimportant to show gratitude for the opportunities you\u2019ve been given. Remember,\nfor you to even <em>have<\/em> the job means\nthat someone (or several people) believed in you at some point.\n\nIf you\u2019ve tried\neverything and really don\u2019t feel that you\u2019re being fairly compensated, then it\nmight be time to move on and find another company that will appreciate your\nskills and attributes.
