{"id":208,"date":"2020-03-06T06:00:55","date_gmt":"2020-03-06T11:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ifg-global.com\/blog\/?p=208"},"modified":"2020-03-03T16:13:27","modified_gmt":"2020-03-03T21:13:27","slug":"dont-just-break-the-glass-ceiling-smash-it-5-tips-for-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ifg-global.com\/blog\/dont-just-break-the-glass-ceiling-smash-it-5-tips-for-women\/","title":{"rendered":"Don\u2019t Just Break The Glass Ceiling \u2013 Smash It!: 5 Tips for Women"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Despite breakthroughs in gender and pay equality, many women\nstill face barriers when trying to advance their careers in business,\ngovernment or academics. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chch.com\/glass-ceilings-still-dominate-in-canadian-business\/\">A\nstudy by Statistics Canada<\/a> looked at more than 10,000 public,\nprivate and government corporations and found that in 2016 and 2017, most of\ntheir Boards of Directors were composed entirely of men. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The so-called \u201cglass ceiling\u201d is an invisible and often not\nhighly discussed barrier within organizations that dictates who gets ahead \u2013\nand who doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the glass ceiling is often associated with women,\nbarriers to advancement can also apply to minorities and others who may be\ndiscriminated against because of age or other factors including family\nbackground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In most cases, glass ceilings exist to preserve the status\nquo. They are the result of unconscious bias backed by a belief on what the\n\u201cright\u201d candidate should look like. Bias can also be more \u201cout in the open\u201d and\ninvolve actions such as bullying or other forms of power plays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Needless to say, those faced with a glass ceiling can be\nleft feeling frustrated, isolated or depressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>While being overlooked for a job or promotion may be frustrating, here are 5 ways women can take action and smash through the glass ceiling:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Do Your Research<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before accepting a job, do\nyour research to find out if the organization is ruled by a glass ceiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organizations with a tendency\ntowards systemic bias or discrimination will show signs of a glass ceiling.\nLook at the top rungs of management. Is there diversity at the top? Is sexist\nlanguage used and accepted within the organization? Is there long term\nresistance to change? What is the vibe of the place? Is there open communication\nwith senior leaders? Talk to people who work or have worked there before making\na final decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Raise Your Hand<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Follow the men\u2019s playbook and\ndon\u2019t be afraid to speak out in meetings. You have something important to say\nso don\u2019t be afraid to flaunt your accomplishments. Most successful women are\nrisk takers. They aren\u2019t afraid to make mistakes and don\u2019t wait until\neverything is perfect to take action. Be your own champion because if you don\u2019t\ntoot your own horn who will?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Dream Big<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have faith in yourself and\nyour goals. Don\u2019t be afraid to come across as ambitious. You deserve to be\nhappy and successful! Aim for senior leadership roles and do your research to\nfind out the best way to get there. Focus on growth and development and always\nbe learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Work Your Network<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether employed or not, we\nall know that making connections is an essential part of career (and life)\nadvancement. Take the time to build relationships both inside and outside of\nyour organization. Identify the champions within your organization and seek a\nmentor who would not be threatened by your will to succeed. Attend networking\nevents both inside and outside of your industry to get a new perspective on\nthings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. There\u2019s Power In Numbers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s often said that, in business, women are the least likely to help other women. In fact, women can sometimes be their own worst enemies. So don\u2019t be afraid to reach out and lend a helping hand. As with most things in life, there\u2019s power in numbers. Offer to mentor junior staff and ask senior executives for guidance on how to get ahead. The laws of the universe dictate that there\u2019s enough success out there for everyone. And remember \u2013 success should never gained at the expense of men. There are many men out there who recognize talent and are more than willing to help women get ahead!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If all your efforts aren\u2019t\nworking out and you feel as if you\u2019ve gone as far as you can, then maybe it\u2019s\ntime to move on to a place where the glass ceiling might be a little easier to\nshatter or not exist at all.
