Whether you’re just out of university, still working toward your degree, or looking to change careers, not having a wealth of experience in the financial industry doesn’t mean you’re automatically out of the running for a good job.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s possible to take the skills, training, and experience you already have and use them to make yourself a strong candidate for finance jobs.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s start with the degree<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you don’t have a degree in accounting, that’s not a deal-breaker. A degree is vital, yes, but it doesn’t have to be in business or finance. Any degree that required analytical and problem-solving coursework can be applied. A degree in humanities or theater incorporates public speaking and interpersonal skills. Computer skills, data entry experience, comfort with technology, strategic planning — these are all useful in the financial industry! There might be certifications you’ll need to get later, but don’t let the lack of a finance-oriented degree hold you back.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don’t wait to begin networking<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It helps to get to know people in the financial and investment world if that’s where you want to be someday. Use LinkedIn, Glassdoor, or other professional websites and platforms to find groups to join. Take some business cards and a good handshake, along with a list of questions. Ask how people got started in their field, what steps they took to get their first job, what classes or skills they’ve picked up along the way. It will give you great insight into what you’ll need to do to be successful, and you never know when a connection can turn into an opportunity.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explore recruitment and internships<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The best way to learn is by doing, and internships are a perfect way to get on-the-job training and experience while earning. Many big companies offer internship programs for university students, but some firms also look at recruitment programs to help extend their reach into traditionally underrepresented communities. It’s an avenue worth exploring.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don’t get discouraged<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We’ve all been there — frustrated with where you are, maybe not enjoying your current job, and feeling like a change will never come. Don’t give up! Use the time to study the market and learn all you can. Prepare questions for when you get an interview, along with your elevator pitch about your skills and experiences. Practice your interview skills and write a stellar cover letter.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n
